Rez
I plugged in my Dreamcast to do a thing and decided to start up Rez, and ended up beating the whole game in one sitting. I remember having trouble with the final boss in the past, but it went pretty smoothly this time.
There isn’t a lot I have to say about Rez, or maybe there’s too much to say. Its soundtrack is fantastic, the style of everything has this cohesive vibe. Each of the 5 missions have a pleasant ramp of challenge, introducing new enemies and incorporating them in waves. Collecting health and bombs gets slightly harder as you’re forced to juggle more enemies, but nothing gets too challenging. It would be a different game if any of the enemy patterns or bosses acted like they actually want to kill you, and not just look cool while sitting in front of you.
I also played the extra level that unlocks in the Beyond menu. It’s cool, was harder than the base game but still not too challenging. If it were a part of the main story I would’ve called it padding. I was playing on Dreamcast, but I looked up the achievements for the newer version of the game and those all seem tedious. I guess it’s difficult to add challenges to a game like this, without making another game’s worth of content. Rez is cooler being short.
Score: 3/3. This is what video games should be all about.
